From updates to storytelling
I really don't do this very often. I always start but never finish. I don't even know why I started this blog to be honest. But I guess it's a good place to put down my thoughts when there's no one to listen to them. Yeah, kinda hard to find people to talk to at 3 am.
I also hope that this is a good exercise in putting my thoughts down to writing. I always have a lot going on in my head. But I find it hard to put them into words. Usually because of either lack of works or the fact that I am very conscious about what I say or write. As an example I thought the previous sentence over 20 times before putting it into words and I'm still not satisfied with it. Also it is a problem when my brain jumps to another topic altogether before I even finish a sentence.
Yeah, yeah. I got a lot of issues. I could just sit here and describe them. Or I could do something to solve it.
One problem I have with putting my thoughts into words is the fear of being criticised by people. And since no one actually fucking reads my blog anyway this works out perfect for me.
Now I can put all my thoughts into words without the fear of being criticised. I would prefer to actually master the art of expressing myself first, and the worry about correcting my mistakes.
And in the case of some poor soul actually reading this, its nice to know that someone took time to actually read my bullshit in the sea of bullshit on the internet. Since I'm not super famous or anything it's fine. And if someone comments or responds to me in some way its something I will be happy about. I just don't want anyone I know to read this I guess. But strangers are fine. I like making new friends.
Speaking of making new friends.
Let me tell you how this came about.
I'm a Rooster Teeth fan. So I joined a group on Facebook with RT fans. And someone on the group pitched an idea of launching a podcast similar to Internet Box. As so I joined them.
Sure there are a shit-ton of podcast like this on the internet. We really don't expect to be famous or win any awards or anything. Even if nothing comes out of it, we'll still have made some friends.
Damn. I really thought that would be a longer story than that.
It happens a lot. Your brain adds a lot of nonexistent fluff to whatever idea or story you have and makes it seem bigger than there actually is but when it comes down to putting that idea down on paper, all the fluff disappears and then you realize that being a novelist is not as easy as having a basic idea for a story in your head.
Speaking of novels, storytelling.
No, I'm not gonna tell a story right now.
My dream is to be a storyteller. To tell a story in an immersive universe filled with living characters. Whenever I read a novel or watch a movie or play a video game the story is something I pay quite a bit of attention to. Of course in a novel the story is the core component of it so there's nothing much to be said about it. But there are a lot of storytelling mediums than books. Movies, Video Games, Anime (cartoons and computer animated too), Puppets, Music or even podcasts are mediums of storytelling.
I want to tell a story. But not just one story. Multiple stories. But all of them connected. I want to create a universe. Where every character is actually living. Not throwaway characters that exist solely for the purpose of moving the plot forward. I don't want thugs from an action movie whose existence is just to get shot by the protagonist. I want living characters. I have observed that Sidney Sheldon does a good job of having living characters in his books. Even if the character is going to die in the next chapter if he/she is an important plot member Sidney Sheldon will tell you how that character got to that point in his life.
I wanna go a step beyond. Everybody has a story. I want every character in my universe to have a story. Not everyone has interesting ones. But everyone has one. I don't want to tell you a story and build a universe around it. The universe is there. I'm just going to tell you what something interesting that happened at a point in time. And everyone in the story has their own story to tell. Maybe I'll tell the story of one random guy in the story. I'll tell what set of incidents occurred for him to be there at that time. And what happened to him after it. How it affected his life.
The possibilities are endless of course. And it's not easy to imagine such permutations of stories even with lots of inspirations from real life. And I'm not going to tell you the story of every character that is involved. But if I know that that characters have a life of their own, hopefully it will be projected to my audience that the character has more of a story that he/she has than what's being told.
I won't say that I am the first person to think about this. Nor will I be first person to implement this. There are various such universes that already exists. Tolkien's Universe and G.R.R Martin's universe comes to mind. And also J.K Rowling's.
I'm sure there are many such universes that I do not know of. But these are immensely popular. Tolkien's and Rowling's universe told people that if there's a universe, then there's infinite number of stories to be told within it. And G.R.R Martin's universe showed people what its like to have living characters in a universe. His universe truly has the randomness that real life has. Yes, given the true nature of everyone involved and even with the resources available, the character/s would have died if this had been real life. And that's why characters die in his universe regardless of how important they were to the plot because that's how real life works. His works takes you away from all the mediocre stories with two dimensional characters that you are bombarded with on a daily basis and gives you a taste of some high quality storytelling.
Alright. I'll stop for now. I wanted to say more. O wanted to tell you about storytelling in video games and even anime. But its already 4am. I need to sleep. Have college in the morning.
So I guess that'll have to wait till next time. Whenever that is.
